Impacts and Safety Concerns

For this project our main findings concluded in health safety concerns involved with this project, codes/standards, other designs and different kinds of pressure water filters. The health risks involved would be ingesting harmful chemicals in the water, which from the team’s findings, the most toxic to ingest would be lead. For codes and standards that this project would need to follow are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Public Health and Safety Organization (NSF). These organizations pertain to the contaminants in water and what is the minimum allowance for safe drinking water. Other designs that were found during research were not portable, require electricity to regulate the temperature of the water and typically only serve a few people at a time. When looking into other water fountains the team concluded that there are not many portable water fountains that do not require electricity while also dispensing cold water. Most fountains that were found included built in water stations that were mounted to a wall and require electricity to run it, or some that are dispensed out from well-known companies such as Poland Spring. However, the ones provided by other companies usually need to be plugged in, come with jugs of water in plastic containers and serve a limited number of people.

When designing the Wishing Well Version 2, it is important to keep in mind these findings on healthy safety concerns, and how it could ultimately impact the environment, society, and the economy. It is vital to ensure proper health and safety due to the fact that people could potentially ingest harmful chemicals from the garden hose if the water is not filtered properly. To avoid this, test strips will be used to ensure the water is healthy for consumption. Providing instructions on the upkeep of the water station ensures that it will be properly sanitized, avoiding future health concerns. When finalizing the design, the team made sure to keep in mind that people of all ages will be able to use this water station; so, making sure children could not hurt themselves on the exterior is a major factor. Ensuring the final design is portable, durable and is easy to assemble is crucial due to the fact that it needs to last for a long time, will be used for different events in different locations, and anyone should be able to recreate the final design. Ultimately the final design aims to positively impact the environment and society by cutting down on the use of plastic water bottles and saving on energy.
